AKB48 is a Japanese idol group produced by Yasushi Akimoto . The group has gained high popularity in Japan . Ten of their last single topped the Oricon weekly charts . " Beginner " and " Heavy Rotation " respectively ranked first and second in the list of best-selling singles in Japan in 2010 , [ 1 ] while the " Everyday , Kachūsha " , " Sakura no Ki ni Naro " , and " Flying Get " so far led the rankings in 2011 . A wide variety of albums and singles AKB48 has sold over ten million copies . [ 2 ]The name is taken from AKB48 Akihabara , an area in Tokyo .
